Background of the study
Substance abuse among youths has emerged as a growing public health concern, affecting not only individual health but also the fabric of social relationships. In Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, increased rates of substance abuse have been linked to deteriorating interpersonal relationships, family disintegration, and community instability. Emerging evidence suggests that the misuse of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, and other illicit drugs adversely affects communication, trust, and social cohesion among young people (Adegoke, 2023; Olawale, 2024). The cultural and social dynamics in Akure North further complicate these effects, as peer pressure and socio-economic stressors contribute to the prevalence of substance abuse. This study explores the multifaceted impact of substance abuse on the quality and nature of social relationships among youths, investigating how substance misuse can lead to social isolation, conflict, and a breakdown of familial ties. By integrating theoretical frameworks with empirical data, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the social consequences of substance abuse in the region, offering insights that can inform both public health interventions and community-based support programs (Folarin, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Substance abuse among youths in Akure North is increasingly undermining the quality of social relationships within families and the broader community. The pervasive use of substances is linked to a host of social problems including communication breakdowns, mistrust, and an increase in interpersonal conflicts. As youths struggle with addiction, their ability to maintain healthy relationships diminishes, leading to isolation and reduced community cohesion. Despite interventions by health and social services, the problem persists, and there remains a lack of localized data on how substance abuse specifically affects social dynamics among young people. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the direct and indirect effects of substance abuse on social relationships in Akure North, thereby providing a basis for the development of targeted support programs and community interventions (Oluwole, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the impact of substance abuse on social relationships among youths.

  • To identify the factors that exacerbate the negative social consequences of substance abuse.

  • To recommend strategies for mitigating the social effects of substance abuse.

Research questions

  • How does substance abuse affect interpersonal relationships among youths in Akure North?

  • What factors contribute to the deterioration of social relationships among substance-abusing youths?

  • What measures can be implemented to improve social cohesion among affected youths?

Research Hypotheses

  • Substance abuse significantly disrupts social relationships among youths.

  • Youths engaged in substance abuse exhibit higher levels of interpersonal conflict.

  • Community-based intervention programs can improve social relationships among substance-abusing youths.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the adverse effects of substance abuse on social relationships among youths. The findings will inform policymakers, community leaders, and health professionals in developing comprehensive intervention strategies that promote social cohesion and support recovery processes (Babatunde, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to assessing the effects of substance abuse on social relationships among youths in Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State. It does not extend to other regions or explore additional factors influencing substance abuse, and is based on data from local surveys and interviews.
